Lisbon has been awarded the prestigious title of Capital of Innovation in Europe by the European Commission. This award recognizes cities that promote innovation and development in their local communities. The prize comes with a monetary award of 1 million euros and the official name of the prize is iCapital. Lisbon emerged victorious over two other finalist cities, Varsovia in Poland and Lviv in Ukraine. The award ceremony took place on the 27th of November 2023 in Marseille, France, where the current mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, received the prize. In his acceptance speech, Mayor Moedas expressed his willingness to use the monetary award to fund social innovation projects and reduce social exclusion in the city. The Unicorn Factory Lisboa, a platform that supports startups and scaleups in creating sound products and business models, will invest the prize money. Until now, Lisbon attracted 54 new technological hubs from 23 different countries and launched 13 programmes of incubation and acceleration. Created 10.000 job posts, triplicated the number of startups in the city and diversified the same in different businesses such as digital health, web 3 technologies and artificial intelligence. All of this in only 2 years. The Town Hall has released this information. This project was the foundation of Lisbon's candidacy for the iCapital award. With this victory, Lisbon has received European validation for its efforts to become an innovative city that is home to those who want to thrive. This marks the ninth edition of the iCapital Awards, celebrating cities fostering inclusive innovation ecosystems that positively impact society. We close the first month of 2024 on high note! We were present at the presentation of two sustainable tourism projects with an #entrepreneurial focus at IFEMA MADRID attending FITUR, the International Tourism Fair. 📌 📌The Finnova Foundation was in charge of presenting these European projects, which have a methodological component of open innovation through the acceleration programs that will be developed during their course: 🚀  CulturaldeTour: Initiative that empowers small or start-up sustainable cultural tourism companies through a 6-month acceleration program. Today, we want to unravel some of the key elements that make Catalonia-Barcelona stands as a pivotal region for #investment. Especially since it's out the snapshot of the #startup ecosystem in #Catalonia for the year 2023: 💼 🌟 Barcelona continues to rank among the most competitive cities in the world, according to the #GlobalPowerCityIndex. It closed 2023 as the 22nd most competitive city, improving one position over the previous year. 🚀 #Catalonia boasts 2,102 #startups (data from 2023) and 20,600 jobs created, the highest figures in the historical series, 4% more than the previous year. #Catalonia is solidifying its position as a leading hub for #innovation and entrepreneurship in Europe. 🌍 Notably, 24% of the workforce in Catalan #startups comes from abroad, contributing to the region's diverse and international appeal. 🤝The #technology sector is leading investment sector, with nearly 40% of the companies driving these investments, followed by companies in #businessservices and the #healthandlifesciences sector.
