Beyond the product: the central role of technology and ecosystems<\/h3>\n

Auto China 2026<\/a> is much more than just a motor show: in Beijing, we saw a crystal-clear snapshot of the transformation currently taking place in the automotive industry. The scale of the event and the number of premieres highlight the magnitude of the phenomenon (380,000 square metres of exhibition space, over 1,400 vehicles, 181 world premieres, 71 prototypes and more than 200 press conferences), but what stands out most clearly is the paradigm shift. The car is no longer the focus of competition, but rather one element of a broader ecosystem, in which software, artificial intelligence, electronic architectures and supply chain management are becoming the true distinguishing factors. <\/p>\n

To give a brief overview of the situation in terms of figures, last year The Chinese automotive industry produced over 34.5 million vehicles<\/strong>(+10.4%), selling nearly 27 million units worldwide. In Europe, registrations of Chinese-brand cars exceeded one million units in 2025 (accounting for almost 30% of imported cars). In 2015, around 60% of cars sold in China were produced by joint ventures with Western or Japanese brands (such as Volkswagen or GM). In ten years, the quantum leap<\/strong> it wasn’t just about aesthetics, but structural<\/strong>, gradually transforming transitional, low-cost and derivative products into technologically desirable vehicles.<\/p>\n

\"Geely<\/p>\n

The focus of competition has shifted significantly: it is no longer a question of powertrains or electrification, but of the ability to develop scalable and industrialisable technology platforms. Digital cockpits, ADAS systems, autonomous driving and the integration of hardware and software now define the value perceived by the customer and the sustainability of the business model. In this context, the speed of development \u2013 from concept to the road \u2013 and the ability to continuously update become strategic levers just as much as the product itself. <\/p>\n

China as a systemic player: speed, integration and pragmatism<\/h3>\n

The most striking finding to emerge from the trade fair is the role played by China, which is no longer merely competing but is setting the pace of change. Chinese manufacturers are redefining the industry\u2019s rules, making their mark on several fronts: vertical integration of the supply chain, the ability to bring innovation to market rapidly, and a pragmatic approach to technology. <\/p>\n

\"A<\/p>\n

This translates into very concrete industrial decisions. Solutions such as plug-in hybrids and range extenders are not viewed as stopgap measures, but as practical tools for meeting customers\u2019 real needs, lowering the barriers to adoption and accelerating the uptake of new technologies. These are customers who, particularly in Europe, feel increasingly distanced from the \u2018dictates\u2019 of the institutions and to whom traditional brands are no longer able to respond with pragmatic, simple and accessible solutions. In fact, China is not just about electric cars and futuristic solutions, but also traditional cars capable of meeting the mobility needs of many buyers on the Old Continent. <\/p>\n

At the same time, the very concept of a product is expanding: some players are moving towards \u2018physical AI\u2019 platforms, integrating vehicles, autonomous driving systems, robotics and new forms of mobility.<\/p>\n

The result is an ecosystem in which innovation is not sporadic, but continuous and systemic, underpinned by industrial capacity and operational speed that make the environment highly competitive and constantly accelerating. This environment is, consequently, proving unsustainable for those who have led the sector\u2019s progress to date. A telling example is that of Toshiro Mibe, CEO and President of Honda<\/a>, who, following a visit to a supplier\u2019s production plant in Shanghai, expressed his resignation in the face of the unassailable technological progress he encountered: \u201cWe cannot compete against all this; there is nothing we can do about it.\u201d <\/p>\n

Europe: between adaptation and strategic repositioning<\/h3>\n

Against this backdrop, European car manufacturers are facing a complex transition phase (a term that is often overused). Whilst maintaining a strong position in terms of brand, quality and heritage, they appear increasingly reactive to trends driven by other players, particularly in the areas of software and the development of \u2018smart\u2019 features. <\/p>\n

The growing prevalence of joint ventures and solutions developed specifically for the Chinese market highlights the need to adapt to a rapidly evolving environment that operates according to different principles than in the past. The real challenge, however, is not merely technological. It concerns organisations\u2019 ability to rethink their processes, decision-making models and market approach, in order to bridge the gap in terms of speed, integration and implementation capacity. <\/p>\n

Auto China 2026 therefore sends a clear message: the future of the automotive industry will not be determined by those who introduce the most innovation, but by those who can manage it effectively and scale it up on a large scale. For European companies, this implies a profound shift in perspective, one that goes beyond the product \u2013 as we understand it today \u2013 and encompasses the entire business model. <\/p>\n

The winner is whoever commercialises innovation the fastest. Europe has the expertise, the brands and the heritage \u2013 now we need to step up the pace. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
